Fascinating! I had heard a story that Jack had fled the UK and ended up on the short side of gun fight out in the wild west of the US. I'll have to dig up that link...
But I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers, still crazy after all these years.... Paul Simon |

That would be a good add-on.

Here's what I've found so far, with no mention of the wild west:

Nobody said that he wasn't seen.....just that nobody came forward to give evidence against him! The same problem exists nowadays.

When I was in London last year, I went on one of those Jack the Ripper tours..........still a rough neighborhood but most of the area has been modernized.....however, there was one street that has not been and it was one where a Ripper murder had taken place. It was very narrow, cobblestoned, and very much without light...it was very easy picturing the whole neighborhood as it must have been.

Yes, that was very much the way things were built in the Cities here. Often, it could be said that the streets may be quite wide but people could shake hands across the street at the top of the buildings.
Here is a picture from the City of York as it still is today as featured at YORKSHAMBLES website. ![]() You have probably been down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. Most of what you see is Victorian. It was built upon the demolished earlier stone tenements. i.e. the old buildings were simply collapsed and used as a foundation for the new. However, this was not done only once. The first houses were more timber framed affairs and were somewhat taller than the picture above but followed the same style. Unfortunately, I cannot find an impression of it. If I remember rightly, these houses were burnt down to erradicate the plague. |

Some of the villages in Germany have some quaint very narrow cobblestone roads.

I wish I were...I went on a 30 day whirlwind tour of Europe with my sister before I went into the hospital last year (thank goodness I did) and I saw a little bit of everything but nothing well. My favorite place was Greece.

Really? Oh, I suppose there are some touristy bits and parts of historical interest. It was good that you went.

Dost I hear a little bit of disregard for Greece. *giggle* Actually seeing the Acropolis and walking the same paths as back then gave me the goosebumps...It was hard for me to fathom before Christ....America is so new in comparison.
